Ten Dancers and a Film of the Productions TIZIANA ARNABOLDI:

the COMPANY after 30 YEARS

"What I look for is the truth. I'm interested in is bringing life to the scene, aiming for the essence, penetrating secrets and intimacy, revealing fears and uncertainties."
Tiziana Arnaboldi

In thirty years of work, the Compagnia Tiziana Arnaboldi has explored social, existential and aesthetic themes at an international level. It has been a relentless research, based around the body seen as an artistic object, bringing to the stage, with the help of a little irony, the dilemmas of the human being and the world we live in.

Finally, a never seen before film will follow, created in collaboration with CISA (Conservatory of Audio-Visual Sciences), featuring emblematic scenes from the Company's 30 years of dance.

A new season is about to begin, featuring a rich programme designed to let you experience Teatro San Materno in all its artistic beauty, as our research continues, a journey punctuated by encounters, gestures and enlightening dialogues. We look forward to seeing you.

Dance-theatre show which offers reflections on diversity and what we would like to be 'normal'.
Ali tells of the encounter between a somewhat pessimistic and disillusioned, but ordinary young man, and an individual with two red wounds on his shoulders, a fallen angel who wants to suffer and to love as all human beings do.

The Sound between Classical Music and Experimental Jazz

World Premiere

ANDREAS SCHAERER and his Band

read all

Residence at Teatro San Materno

Andreas Schaerer – vocals, beatboxing, composition
Andreas Tschopp – trombone, tuba
Matthias Wenger – alto saxophone, flute
Benedikt Reising – baritone saxophone, bass clarinet
Marco Müller – bass
Christoph Steiner – marimba, drums

They don't like to call themselves a real band but rather ... a storm (ein Sturm)!
A Swiss avant-garde Jazz band, the sextet was formed in 2005 based around the initiative and compositions of band leader Andreas Schaerer, a simply incredible, charismatic artist, who boasts an extraordinary voice. Schaerer, it should be remembered, is without doubt one of the finest and most original jazz singers to be found on the European scene. He was able to win over the prestigious KKL Hall (alongside the Lucerne Symphony orchestra) to such an extent that one commentator described it as "a new wind of folly blowing through vocal improvisation".

La morte e la fanciulla (Death and the Maiden)

Directed and choreographed by Michele Abbondanza and Antonella Bertoni

Dancers: Eleonora Chiocchini, Valentina Dal Mas, Claudia Rossi Valli

read all

On stage, three quite different "masterpieces".
A musical one: the Quartet in d minor "Death and the maiden".
A physical one: the human being and the excellence of its dynamics.
A spiritual-philosophical one: the mystery of the end and its ever-present gaze upon us.

Having already explored, with Matthias Claudius in the text of the Lied and with Franz Schubert’s String Quartet in d minor, the theme of death in the company of young female figures, across the dark border between sexuality and death; in this show, these two aspects are split into choreography (the maiden) and video (death).

Original title: Der Tod und das Mädchen
Lighting design: Andrea Gentili
Lights: Andrea Gentili and Nicolò Pozzerle
Video: Jump Cut
Organisation: Dalia Macii
Administration and press office: Francesca Leonelli
Production: Compagnia Abbondanza/Bertoni

Médée Kali

Teatro Libero Palermo / Directed by Beno Mazzone

Written by Laurent Gaudé
Translation and direction: Beno Mazzone
Music: Antonio Guida
Lights: Fiorenza Dado

read all

Medea killed her children. Time has passed, but the idea that her children lie on Greek land is unbearable. She returns to her children’s tomb to take them away, and to complete her revenge. She realises then that she is being followed by a man she doesn't know. She is careful to never get too close to him, but he follows her doggedly. She enjoys his presence. She speaks to him. Will this stranger become her next lover or the fiercest of her enemies? She feels that he will soon be in her good graces, as he is handsome and because Medea has never been able to resist the beauty of men. Written in 2003, Medea becomes, in Gaudé’s writing, the goddess of death, dance and love, and  renamed Medea Kali, with Indian origin, and backdrop of a new people.

TE’ or 手 means "hand" in Japanese. 5 diatonic accordions, 5 masters.
Unchallenged masters of the instrument, 10 dancing hands on the keyboards, a blend of musical techniques, featuring different cultures, 5 decades of supporting each other, lives that are told.

These musicians are like the fingers of a hand, different, complementary, accomplices, all essential.

These ten hands, for about the same duration as a CD, take you to all the corners of Europe with harmony and complicity, anger and tenderness, both past and present, but always with great musicality.

The name "Samurai" for this group is no accident, nor the 'TE' or 手 as the title of the album.
It’s a glimpse of ancestral Japan, of our collective imagination.

Autour du masque

Directed by Pierre Byland

Residence at Teatro San Materno

read all

Mankind, in order to survive, has used a ruse: transforming itself to appear stronger, smarter, better looking...and invented the mask. Such an opportunity for theatre!

The actor is transformed thanks to the mask. And when were not in agreement with the mask, they invent the counter-mask.
What an extraordinary means to be able to go beyond the realism of everyday life! To invent a style of play which can come close to the tragic, the farcical, the abstract, the surreal.

A residence at Teatro San Materno and a workshop held by Pierre Byland, culminating in a performance in the outdoor area of the theatre.

Explorations in Bauhaus spaces

in collaboration with the Lausanne company Junior Marchepied

Residence at Teatro San Materno

read all

Young dancers of the Junior Marchepied company will work for two weeks with choreographer Tiziana Arnaboldi at the Teatro San Materno, built in 1928 by architect Carl Weidemeyer. Together they will explore Bauhaus architecture, its interior and exterior spaces, some 100 years since the birth of the artistic movement.
The dancers are training to become aware of how, in each specific space of the theatre, the great inventiveness of the Bauhaus movement can be perceived. Each place acquires a multifunctional character, the spaces becoming a real hothouse of creativity.

The public is invited on Saturday 29 June to experience the various spaces, both from a physical and an emotional point of view, in which reality and imagination go hand in hand. This will be a danced itinerary, aiming to enlighten the gaze of both actors and visitors alike.

Company Junior Marchepied was founded by dancers and choreographers Corinne and Nicholas Pettit Rochet and is based in Lausanne. For nine months, dancers who have just finished their training and are looking for their first job in the professional world of dance have the opportunity to come together to continue working on a daily basis with international choreographers.
